Wine Courses

Bruce Lane (standing left) and Lewis Battist (standing right) conduct an adult education wine course for ILR - American University.

Let us tailor a wine course for your club, business or other organization. A single session or several sessions. Survey the principal wine types and regions or focus on your specific interests. A tasting is included during or after each session, as appropriate. Our courses include the following:

Wine 101: Introduction to Wine. One Session, 2 Hours plus "Social" Hour After.

An introduction to wine. Learn about the principal types of wine; where wine is produced; examples of how to read a wine label and how to purchase or order wine; how to taste wine and what to look for; how to open, serve and store wine; and how to match wine with food. An illustrative tasting is, of course, included. Never again feel intimidated by wine!

Wine 102: Your Special Interest. One Session, 2 Hours plus "Social" Hour After.

Join with us to select and to focus on the wines of a country or region of particular interest to you. For example, we can explore the wines of France, or Italy, or Spain, or California or Australia in depth. We'll taste and discuss examples of the principal varieties from the country or region you select. Included will be a brief history of the wines of that country or region and a discussion of their unique features. Labels, producers, climate, terrior and the like will be discussed.

Wine 101 and Wine 102 can be combined for a fascinating two session course.

Wine 103: Wine in Depth. 3 Sessions, each 2 Hours plus "Social" Hour After.

A chance to go into much more depth than Wine 101. We'll study:

  • History of wine; the major wine producing regions; the principal varieties of grape; climate and terroir; and the basics of wine growing and production.
  • How to taste wine and what to look for
  • How to read a wine label
  • How to purchase or order wine
  • How to open, serve and store wine
  • Wine/food combinations
  • Starting a "wine cellar"
  • Wine glasses and wine accessories

Each session will include a tasting chosen from among some of the options described under Wine Tastings.

Wine 104: All you ever wanted to know about wine - and more. 4 Sessions, each 2 hours, plus "Social" Hour After.

This course will be custom designed for the sponsor. The material covered in Wine 103 will be presented in greater depth and additional subject matter will be included, such as sensory perceptions of wine; component tasting; the influence of oak and other factors in the making of wine; identifying common wine faults; and an in-depth analysis of wine/food combinations. The tasting included in each session will be customized and carefully discussed.

All courses will be conducted at a convenient venue to be agreed upon with the sponsor. A comprehensive bibliography and other instructional materials will be included with each course.
